Education in Russia The text describes the educational system in the Russian Federation. Children usually start primary school at the age of seven and study there for four years. At the age of eleven, they start secondary school. Compulsory education lasts until the ninth grade, after which students can either continue their studies in the tenth and eleventh grades or go to a college or a technical school for vocational training. After graduating from school (usually at the age of seventeen or eighteen), students can go to a university. University education generally lasts four years for a bachelor's degree, and an additional two years for a master's degree. Most students in Russia study at state universities for free if they have high entrance exam scores, but some choose private institutions. Entrance is competitive and depends on the results of the Unified State Exam (EGE). Most universities are co-educational, meaning they are open to both men and women.
